Grows 3-5ft tall in dense colonies with light green, un-branched stems and flat, drooping, rough leaves. Leaves are light green to bluish green. The joint is swollen and dark-colored. The flower head is branched and may be open and airy or narrow. The flower spikelets are purplish turning tan when mature.
