A slender plant growing to 3 ½ft tall with a long, grayish seed head. Flowers are tiny on slender side branches.

Grows to 3ft with an open pyramid shape. Tiny flowers are purplish. A leaf often sheathes the flower head and sticks out at a right angle as the grass matures. There is a conspicuous tuft of white hair where the leaf joins the stem.

Grows in a tuft to 3ft tall. A leaf with hairy edges sheathes the flower head and sticks out at an angle as the grass matures. The flower head is a dense, narrow cylinder of tiny, greyish flower spikes.
