Buckwheat (Polygonaceae) Grows over 4 to 6 feet tall with branches above the middle. Leaves are narrowly triangular or lance-shaped with smooth or slightly wavy edges up to 14" long. Flower heads turn reddish-brown at maturity. Flora of North America reference. |

Fiddle Dock Family:
Buckwheat (Polygonaceae) Grows to 2 feet high with a slender, erect stem. Leaves are often oblong with a narrow middle in the rough shape of a fiddle, and can be wavy edged. Flowers grow in dense whorls forming a long cluster. Distinguished by the long teeth on the edges of the tepals. The whole plant turns red at maturity.
