A large shrub or tree growing to 25 feet with gray bark and corky ridges on the trunk. Leaves are thick and rough with many cross-veins. They feel like sandpaper when rubbed and often have insect galls. Flowers are inconspicuous and greenish. Fruit is orange and cherry-like.
